Abbas lied to Rice about recognition of Israel

PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas told visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last week that he would demand any party that sits in government with him recognize the right of the Jewish state to exist.

Abbas lied.

Speaking days later in his native Arabic, and therefore apparently feeling open to express his true views, Abbas told the exact opposite to a pan-Arab television network.

In an interview with Al-Arabiya that was translated by Palestinian Media Watch, Abbas said:

"Hamas is not required, Hamas is not required to recognize Israel. ... It is not required of Hamas, nor of Fatah, nor of the Popular Front (for the Liberation of Palestine) to recognize Israel."

Late last week the leader of a "military wing" of Abbas' Fatah faction confirmed that the chairman also seeks Israel's demise, just using different methods than Hamas and Hizb'allah.

The terror boss noted that Abbas has always insisted that peace with Israel must include the right of millions of so-called "Palestinian refugees" to flood and demographically destroy the Jewish state.

It is difficult for many in Israel to understand why governments like the Bush administration declare Abbas a "moderate" when he is seeking the same ultimate outcome as Hamas.
