The government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Wednesday rejected the Supreme Court's effort to interfere with its decision to not establish a full state commission of inquiry into the handling of the Lebanon war.
Attorney's for the government said that whether or not to establish a commission of inquiry into any matter was up to the ruling government alone.
Instead of a state commission of inquiry, which would be appointed by the Supreme Court and have the power to remove public officials found guilty of wrongdoing, Olmert set up the Winograd Commission.
The five members of the Winograd Commission were hand picked by Olmert, and are not tasked with investigating the personal performance of the prime minister or his cabinet ministers during the conflict with Hizb'allah.
Protesting IDF reservists have called the Winograd Commission an attempt to cover up the truth of what happened during the war.
A majority of Israelis feel Olmert failed to deliver on his promise of victory over Hizb'allah, and instead sent many soldiers to their deaths for the sake of dubious diplomatic gains.
