South Africa’s biggest trade union stood shoulder-to-shoulder with representatives of that country’s growing Muslim community in late October and issued a statement decrying Israel as an “illegitimate, terrorist state, racist, expansionist and chauvinistic [that] has no right to exist.”
Members of the almost entirely black Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), made up overwhelmingly of card-carrying members of the country’s ruling African National Congress and the Communist Party, marched in Cape Town together with the militant Islamic organization, Qibla.
The September edition of COSATU’s magazine, The Shopsteward, lionized Lebanon’s Hizb’allah as “heroic defensive fighters.”
Since the collapse of the apartheid regime, the country’s governments have embraced the Palestinian Arabs and treated Israel as an enemy of South Africa.
