An Israeli Arab man arrested in December 2005 was convicted Monday of spying for Iran.

Jaris Jaris confessed to being recruited by Iran to infiltrate Israel's corridors of power in order to pass sensitive information to the Islamic Republic.

Jaris planned to accomplish that task by seeking election to the Knesset as a member of the ultra-leftist Meretz Party, which polls indicate will increase its parliamentary representation in the next election.

As part of a plea bargain, Jaris' sentence was reduced to a prison term of 34 months and 12 months of probation.
