US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is planning to come to the Middle East in the coming days to try yet again to kickstart the stalled land-for-peace process.
Rice reportedly sees an opportunity to break the deadlock, despite the fact that the "Palestinian" side is sinking deeper into a civil strife of its own making.
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Saturday the secretary believed that "there is a potential opening here to make progress on the issue of a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security."
He did not explain just what the perceived opening was.
