The new route of Israel’s security fence had rendered the barrier useless as a means to prevent “Palestinian” terrorist attacks in Jerusalem, senior security officials said Tuesday.
Defense Minister Sha’ul Mofaz approved changes in the route of the fence around the capital this week in order to bring it into compliance with a High Court ruling that the barrier should inconvenience as little as possible the Arabs living in the area.
But by doing so Israel had turned the fence into a worthless scar on the land, complained military chiefs.
According to the new route, the fence will come to within 300 meters of the Jerusalem suburbs of Mevasseret and Har Adar.
One member of the security team tasked with drafting the original fence route labeled its new course “an avalanche about to smash into is.”
He told the Jerusalem Post that the government had been warned, adding, “no one should scream and shout when a terrorist attack hits the city or its suburbs.”
