Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday said everyone knows Israel will have to one day surrender the entire Golan Heights if it wants peace with Syria.
His worrying remarks came during a heated argument with opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu at a sitting of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Olmert charged that during his previous term as prime minister, Netanyahu had realized what Olmert was now saying and had been prepared to cede the strategic plateau.
Netanyahu angrily replied that Olmert was mistaken.
Olmert went on to say that he remains opposed to a renewal of negotiations with Syria at this time, but concerned observers noted that he had set dangerous preconditions for future talks.
