Sanctions won't prevent Iran nukes - EU

A memo circulated among EU officials on Monday noted that a toothless financial embargo is not going to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Nevertheless, a package of very limited economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic is precisely what EU foreign minister voted for when they met in Brussels later in the day.

The memo's author, EU foreign policy tzar Javier Solana - a stiff opponent of military action against Iran - appeared to give up hope in the letter.

"At some stage we must expect that Iran will acquire the capacity to enrich uranium on the scale required for a weapons program."

Solana's belated realization is sure to bolster the arguments of those in Washington and Jerusalem that the time has come for full-blown economic sanctions against Iran, and possibly military intervention.
