According to intelligence sources cited at the weekend, the Pentagon has drawn up plans for a major aerial assault on Iran's nuclear facilities and air defenses.
The plans are designed to be fully implemented within 24 hours of receiving an attack order from President George W. Bush.
Pentagon officials later denied the report.
However, the recent deployment of another US carrier battle group to the Persian Gulf would suggest someone is anticipating war.
With Iran's reported successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile into space last week, America and her allies may be pressed into action sooner than expected.
