UN: Arms smuggling threatens Lebanon truce

Visiting UN chief Ban Ki-moon indirectly blamed the government of Lebanon on Saturday for the deteriorating condition of the ceasefire that ended last summer's war between Israel and Hizb'allah.

That truce, which was brokered by the UN, demanded a complete halt to arms shipments to Hizb'allah via Lebanon's border with Syria.

But Ban told his Lebanese hosts that during talks in Jerusalem last week, Israel presented him with compelling evidence that the smuggling continues.

Lebanon's leaders vehemently denied the charges, and blasted Israel for continuing to watch what takes place on the Lebanon-Syria border from the air.

Israeli security officials and a growing number of lawmakers are warning that the nation may find itself again at war with Hizb'allah as early as this summer due to Lebanon's and the international community's broken promise to disarm the group.
