Residents of the southern Israel town of Sderot on Wednesday staged a public demonstration demanding that the government actively defend it against ongoing rocket attacks from nearby Gaza.

More than 1,500 Israelis from around the country decided to forgo the picnics and nature hikes that characterize the first day of the Passover holiday to stand in solidarity with Sderot.

Local residents and their guests marched through the working-class town waving Israeli flags and sending a defiant message to their terrorist tormentors: You will not drive us from this place!

Local officials took visiting Israelis to the town's edge to show them just how close it lies to Beit Hanoun, a northern Gaza den of terror that serves as the launching pad for most rocket attacks on southern Israel.

They were then addressed by several speakers, including right-thinking Member of Knesset Effi Eitam, who demanded the government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert do more to defend Sderot.
