Take your pick, Israel’s Military Intelligence chief warned the cabinet Sunday. War could be triggered this summer by any of the following parties or a combination of some of them: Iran, Syria, Hizb’allah, Hamas and World Jihad.
All are spoiling for a fight said Major-General Amos Yadlin, and any one of them “can bring about a deterioration in the situation this summer.”
News agencies reported that the head of Israel’s internal security service – the Shin Bet – also reported that Hamas, newly in charge of the Gaza Strip, is considering carrying out a terrorist attack which could draw the IDF into Gaza.
The overall assessment appears to be that while none of Israel’s enemies may actually choose to initiate a conflict just yet, one or more could miscalculate in a way that tips things over the edge.
In a Middle East malodorous with fumes of hatred and tension, one spark could ignite a conflagration.
